What do I need to bring?
If you have the possibility of packing a bag, we suggest you bring:
- Clothes for you and your children
- Personal belongings and/or things that mean a lot to you
- Money or credit/debit card
- Spare keys for your house and e.g. your car
- Toys for the children
- Medicine and prescriptions
- Telephone and address book
- All official documents concerning yourself and your children: Marriage license, birth certificates, passport, immigration papers etc.
How long can I stay at the shelter?
It varies how long the women stay here, but most are here between 3 and 6 months. Among other things, it depends on what your municipality can help you with, as well as your own effort.
To what extent should I mobilise myself while I live at the shelter?
It is important that you take actions to amend your situation while you live at the shelter, i.e. contacting different authorities such as police and employment center, consult the doctor for treatments, apply for an apartment, apply for a job and other things that can help you further along in life. Of course our social workers will help and support you when you need it.
Am I allowed to smoke at the shelter?
The shelter in Frederiksberg: Smoking is only allowed in the smoke free cabin on the ground floor and in the courtyard behind the house. Smoking in the rooms and on the balconies is prohibited.
The shelter in Copenhagen: Smoking is only allowed in the smoke free cabin in the basement. Smoking in the rooms and common rooms is prohibited.
Who does the cleaning?
You clean your own room. All residents are responsible for keeping kitchens, bathrooms and common rooms clean and tidy.
Should I cook my own food?
You are responsible for grocery shopping and cooking for you and your kids. You have your own refrigerator and there is a dishwasher that you fill and empty together with the other residents.
Can I do my laundry at the shelter?
Washer and dryer is at your disposal for free, but you need to by your own detergent and softener.
Are there any social get-togethers at the shelter?
We have ongoing events at the shelters. Information and dates are given at the resident meetings and on the bulletin boards. You’ll quickly get to know the other women and children at the shelter when you participate in the events, thus we expect you to attend as many as you can.
Can I get help from the shelter after I move out?
You will be able to have personal conversations with one of our social workers whenever you need it. You’ll talk to the social worker, that was your contact person while you lived at the shelter. The social worker can also act as assessor and take part in meetings with different authorities, such as the municipality and the social services. Moreover, we will invite you to social events in the shelter as well as in a network group of women who have lived at a shelter.
